Obituary of Charlene M. Sherman
Charlene Sherman, 94, passed away on February 19, 2025, surrounded by her crazy family, listening to ridiculous stories from the past and present, laughter, tears, and probably some things she wished she hadn't heard. She left this world knowing how much she was loved and the impact she had on all our lives.
Charlene was born July 8, 1930, to Elmer and Hattie (Esancy) Davis in Liberty. She worked as a telephone operator in her younger days and on April 30, 1948, she married Kenneth Sherman. Charlene became a homemaker, raising their five children; Arlinda, Kathleen, Doug, Ruth, and Marcia. She loved being outside, whether it be gardening vegetables to can for the winter, tending to her beautiful flowers, or feeding her birds. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and sewing. She loved to cook and we all looked forward to her homemade peanut butter fudge on Halloween and Christmas. A visit to her home around the holidays always involved her bringing out the Tupperware filled with fudge, peanut butter balls, and peanut clusters.
Charlene had numerous grand, great-grand and great-great-grandchildren. She loved to be surrounded by her family and any friends we brought around, gathering at her home for holidays, birthdays or just a quick visit. She was Grammie Sherman to us all. Always so sweet and kind, yet not afraid to speak her mind when necessary. We all knew that we had a place in her home and heart, always met with a big hug and a kiss. She was the rock that brought us all together and will be missed by so many.
Charlene was predeceased by her husband of 36 years; her parents; her siblings, Roland Davis and Joyce Sweetland; her daughter, Kathleen (Sherman) Flanders; grandson, Billy Jo Sherman; daughter-in-law, Patricia Sherman; and her son-in-laws, Basil Pearse Jr and David Rhodes.
She is survived by her daughters, Arlinda Pearse of Searsmont, Ruth Rhodes of Thomaston, Marcia Jewett of Montville, and her son, Doug Sherman and wife Kathy, of Liberty, as well as her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
We would like to thank the staff at Harbor Hill in Belfast for their exceptional care and for making her feel so loved. She was so appreciative of each and every one of you.
Charlene will be buried with her late husband in a private ceremony at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta. Per Charlene's request, there will be no formal funeral. There will be a Celebration of Life in honor of her 95th birthday on July 6, 2025, at her home in Liberty.
