Ronald H. Dow Obituary

RONALD H. DOW, 92, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2024 in Belfast, Maine.  Born on October 29, 1932 in Perham, Maine, the son of Emma E. (Harris) and Merle J. Dow.

He was educated in the local Perham school system.  Ron was an excellent piano player, having been taught by his mother.  He attended college at UMO where he majored in speech and theatre.  After completing his four-year degree, he received his Master's and Doctor of Education status from B.U.

Ron was a PFC in the US Army Reserve, retiring honorably in December 1962.  He began a long and successful teaching career starting in the Millinocket school system.  In the Fall of 1966, he began his college teaching career as an English professor at Aroostook State College.  Ron and Emma relocated to Easton and began an enjoyable endeavor of Hostas and Horses.  Their Ledge Hill Farm was the source of numerous Hosta plants and top-of-the-line show horses.  Dow Arabians participated in the success of “Oran Van Crabbet” who was the first Arabian to hold three National titles.

Ron sold the farm in Easton after Emma passed in 2002 and moved to Belfast, where he enjoyed many years of tranquility at the Hosta Gardens on the Back Belmont Road.

Ron is survived by his cousin, Arlen Dow, close friend Rainey Jackson, Belfast Family, Allen and Rick Holmes and their families along with student and friend, Chad Dixon, of New Hampshire.

Per Ron’s wishes, there were no services.  Interment will be carried out at Grove Cemetery, Belfast, with Emma and Oran.
