Obituary of Nelson Grady Wight
Nelson Wight of Belfast, Maine passed away on June 25, 2022. He suffered a stroke in March of last year and recuperated quite well, but cancer claimed his life in the end. Nelson made friends very easily, a real people-person. He loved to ask about your background and loved to remember your name, birthplace and many other details about you after just one meeting.
His pride and joy was working long hours in his garden every day, pulling every single weed; none survived! For many years in his retirement, he cut his own firewood and got it ready to fuel the wood furnace and several wood stoves used by his family.
Nelson was born February 21, 1929, right on Woods Road, close to where he enjoyed his 26 years of retirement. He and his wife lived in Alaska for about the same length of time with their six children. The family liked to travel and one time the parents took all six children plus a brother-in-law, Jack Hills, on a fun trip to Europe visiting 12 countries in a VW van that they purchased in Germany. Many tours in US, Canada and Mexico were enjoyed in the PU camper-home, and when Nelson worked for the airlines in Alaska, they visited many foreign countries already having caught the travel fever. One of the favorite destinations was the Cabot Trail in Nova Scotia, Canada.
His wish was to be home with family at the end of his life and to live to the age of 93, as his adored grandfather had done - both came true.
Nelson is survived by his wife, Ola Wight, and his children, Geoffrey Wight, Greg Wight, Heidi Wight Gransbury, Vangie Wight-Crask, and a special nephew, Ashley Place, who has been very close to the family; sisters Eloise Wight Bettors and Eleanor Wight Hansen; grandchildren Robert and Lonny Gransbury, Naomi and Nathan Yelmene, Sarah Wight Carnahan, Ryan Wight, Carly Wight, Briannah Wight Peaslee, Geary Crask, Shaylie Crask McCarthy, Jesse Crask, Jasmine Bowen and Daniel Woods; great-grandchildren, Delila Carnahan, Oliver Wight, Jude Wight, Jaan Shaikh, Ezlyn Shaikh, Charlotte Peaslee, Wesley Peter Estes, Ari Estes, Zoe Crask and James Nelson McCarthy.
Nelson was predeceased by two sons, George Nelson Wight and Timothy Nathan Wight, who passed away three months apart in 2019 and by his brothers, Tom Wight, Stewart Wight, Pete Wight and Dick Wight.
